What most residents miss is that the quiet part of summer, the four weekends between the first of August and Labor Day, is where this year's calendar actually gets interesting. Three venues within a ten minute drive of downtown are doing the heavy lifting, and if you plan by venue instead of by date, you can pull together a full month of nights out without ever crossing the Douglas County line.
Here is what is on, where the new lunch spot went in, and how to read the Storm Chasers homestand so you are not showing up on the one weeknight the team is on the road.
The three anchors doing the work
Almost every worthwhile evening in Papillion this month is happening at one of three places: Werner Park at 12356 Ballpark Way, SumTur Amphitheater at Walnut Creek, or the pair of open air spots the library uses for storytime. The Storm Chasers alone are hosting twelve home games in August, since the Rochester Red Wings make their first trip to the Omaha metro, playing 6 games at Werner Park, August 18-23, and the St. Paul Saints come through twice, closing out one series on the first weekend and returning for another six-game set later in the month. That is not a slow month. That is a month where the hardest decision is which Tuesday you skip.
SumTur, meanwhile, has three straight nights of the same headliner locked in. And the library is running weekly evening programs outdoors at Halleck Park and Papillion City Park, which most people forget exists as an option once school lets out.
A new lunch pin on Olson Drive
The one genuinely new thing to try this month sits at 304 Olson Drive, Suite #111, and will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Crisp & Green opened at the end of July as the chain's third greater Omaha location, following its Dodge Street and West Omaha stores. It is the same operator group behind those two, so the menu will be familiar to anyone who has already been: grain bowls, wraps, salads, smoothies. If you missed the grand opening free entrée on July 31, the follow-up Wellness Series event on August 1 at 10 a.m. featured a 45-minute sculpt workout led by instructor A'Lexus French, with food samples afterward. The chain has said it plans to keep those wellness events on rotation as the store settles in.
What is worth knowing as a resident: this is the first fast-casual salad concept to plant itself right off Highway 370 on that stretch of Olson, which had previously been dominated by sit-down chains and coffee. If you have been driving to 72nd for a lunch bowl, that trip just got shorter.
Werner Park's back-loaded homestand
The Storm Chasers schedule this August is oddly shaped. There is one weekend at the front, then a two-week road trip, then ten straight home dates. If you have kids on a bedtime and want a shot at a home run ball, the useful thing to know is which promotional nights actually land at Werner Park versus which ones are theme-only.

The Rochester series is the one to circle. The Washington Nationals affiliate is making its first trip to the Omaha metro under the current alignment, which means if you have a Nationals fan in the family or you just want to see a roster that has not been through Papillion before, this is the week. Ticket prices have been holding at the nine to nineteen dollar range on the secondary market for the August home games, which is roughly what a movie ticket runs and about half of what a comparable Class-AAA seat costs in Des Moines or Kansas City on the same weekend.
One scheduling quirk worth flagging: the Saints series that ends August 2 and the one that starts August 22 are separated by exactly twenty days, and the team is on the road from August 4 through 16. If a friend visits from out of town in the first half of the month expecting a ball game, the answer is no. Aim the second half of the month.
Three nights of the same headliner at SumTur
The mid-month move is SumTur. Billy McGuigan plays Aug 13, Aug 14, and Aug 15, each at 8:00 p.m., which is a rare three-night residency for a Papillion-owned venue that usually rotates acts nightly. McGuigan is a Nebraska Music Hall of Fame inductee and two-time Las Vegas Headliner of the Year, and the format leans into 60s, 70s, and 80s rock with a family band setup. If you have been to a McGuigan show at the Rose or the Holland, you already know what you are getting; if you have not, the SumTur setting at Walnut Creek makes it worth going once even if the setlist is not your era.
Practical notes for residents who have not been to SumTur in a while: the venue offers fixed seating for 350 and hillside seating for more than 2,000, so hillside blankets are the move, and the parking situation is significantly easier than any equivalent Omaha venue.
Papillion's calendar this month is dense in a way that rewards routine. Pick a venue you already trust. Show up more than once. The month plans itself.
The small stuff worth putting on the fridge
Not every August night has to be a ticketed event. A few smaller items are worth pinning to a shared calendar:
- Halleck Park Duck Pond storytime, Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. The library runs it outdoors through the summer and it wraps up before the pond gets buggy.
- Papillion City Park evening storytime, August 5 and August 19, 5 to 6 p.m. Same idea, different setting, and it slots neatly into a picnic before a Storm Chasers night game.
- 2nd Annual Glow in the Dark Foam Party, Saturday August 8 at 7:30 p.m. at 72nd Street and Highway 370. Not for everyone. Excellent for a specific subset of eight-year-olds.
- 50 Mile March: Operation Freedom Path Landing Celebration, Sunday August 23 at 9 a.m. at Werner Park. This is a community welcome, not a ticketed event, and worth showing up for even if you have no direct connection to the march.
The library programming at the Sump branch continues on its usual weeknight rotation through August as well, with the main youth calendar staying active until schools go back.
A resident's shortest path through August

Weekend one: catch the Saturday Storm Chasers game on August 1, get the Ben Zobrist bobble or autograph window, and hit Crisp & Green for lunch beforehand.
